We work with clients to design their ideal, unique bathrooms. The spaces we design range from indoor household bathrooms to compost toilet structures, restaurant bathrooms, and communal bathrooms in ecovillages.
Our Bathroom Design Principles
Point of Shift designs beautiful bathrooms, weaving the following three concepts to create bathrooms that connect us to self, community, and the earth. Not every design explicitly includes all three elements, but this framework outlines how POS approaches bathroom design and intention. Learn more about our principles here.
1. Connect to Self
Bathrooms are a space for selfcare, ritual, and to breathe – a place to nourish, pamper, take care of ourselves and return to center. How can this intention lead to spaces that feel like home, breath and safety?
Example Design Components:
- Soft, calm colors pulled from the landscape
- Playing with space to feel cozy or expansive
- A door that feels inviting, secure, magical, and private
- Creative, whimsically designed to match your uniqueness
2. Connect to Community
Bathrooms allow communities to gather as well as create space to be, get ready, and brush teeth together. As a central node in the home or community, how can bathrooms build, grow, and deepen our connections with others?
Example Design Components:
- Notes hung on the wall from previous poopers with clotheslines and clothespins
- Clear signage to allow all users to interact with the compost toilet
- Built as a community space to encourage gathering
3. Connect to Earth
Our waste (poop and pee) has evolved to be a benefit to the earth, providing valuable nutrients such as Nitrogen and Phosphorous to soil. How can bathrooms remind us of our connection to the earth?
Example Design Components:
- Earthen floors and walls
- Bringing trees, plants, and greenery into the bathroom
- A sink that drains to feed plants
- A toilet seat shaped like a leaf
